The narrator, 14-year old Susie Salmon, was raped and murdered. His assailant is not known, not captured, not arrested. She narrates the entire book, as she watches over the people that she left on earth. Through the years, she follows the people she loves as well as her assailant, wondering if justice will ever be served, only to see how much time changes everything. To begin with, this book is already heartbreaking simply because the protagonist is already dead. It makes the readers feel almost hopeless, that the only possible happy ending this story will have, is when they get justice. But the thing is, Susie will never come back to life, she’ll never live again. It was actually just really sad.
The book is good, although it was a bit boring at times. (and dragging!) But I kept up with it because the writing is good and it just has such a unique plot. And I also really loved and felt for the characters, especially Susie’s dad. Depressing though 
I do recommend it. However, if you're the kind of reader that unfortunately doesn't have a lot of time in their hands and would like to only read the highly-recommended ones, I don't think this one would be it.
*** And yes, they are making this into a movie showing 2009 starring big names; Rachel Weisz, Susan Sarandon, and Mark Wahlberg. The girl who will be playing Susie is Saoirse Ronan (Briony from Atonement). Yay!
I really enjoyed this book. I've re-read it a few times as well. I always end up reading it in one sitting. I found it to be a very poignant, bittersweet tale.
